Qantas Resumes Sydney to San Francisco Flights
23rd Jul 2015
With the Australian aviation authorities having no problem and approving the expanded codeshare alliance between Qantas and American Airlines all stumbling blocks for the Australian carrier to resume its service between Sydney and San Francisco are now gone.
Sydney-San Francisco Service Returns on 18th December
The national airline of Australia revealed it will resume service on the Sydney-SF route on 18th December. It will first fly five times every week, but will add another flight from 1st February next year, making it a total of six weekly flights between the two cities.
Explaining its approval, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said the Qantas-AA codeshare arrangement will:
"Likely lead to additional capacity on the Sydney to Los Angeles route and increased capacity and competition on the Sydney to San Francisco route."
ACCC Commissioner Jill Walker said in a statement:
"This is likely to result in benefits to passengers that wish to use these services."

One of the biggest reasons that Qantas is able to resume the service it cut off in 2011 to focus on its Fort Worth, Texas hub, was that American Airlines started a direct daily services between Los Angeles and Sydney, as well as between Los Angeles and Melbourne. The first of these will operate four times a week, while the second will fly one time per week.
This has released Qantas Boeing-747 planes the Australian carrier uses for these routes so they can be deployed on the Sydney-San Francisco route.
Gareth Evans, Qantas International CEO said:
"The feedback from our customers since we announced the expansion of the Qantas and American Airlines alliance has been fantastic. They are thrilled we are returning to San Francisco, which is the most popular onward destination for Qantas' customers traveling to the U.S."
Flights will depart Sydney airport at 9:30 AM and land in San Francisco at 15:00 PM on the same day. When returning, Qantas planes will take off from United States at 23:25 PM and will arrive in Australia the next day at 9:00 in the morning.
