Next to Hobart International Airport, Launceston Airport is Tasmania's second busiest airport. It is also the fastest growing airport of the state, and Australia's 13th busiest airport in terms of the number of passengers. In the year 2008-2009, the airport had more than 1million passengers.

History

The first ever airport in Tasmania was built after the Tasmania Aero Club was formed in 1927. It was located on the Western Junction, which was then also known as the Valley of Springs. In the 1930, the airport, which was called the Western Junction Airport, became operational. A year later, the Controller of Civil Aviation Colonel Brinsmead officially opened the airport as a government aerodome.

For four years (1940-1944), the airport was used by the Royal Australian Air Force as their base. The Bellman hangars from that period can still be found on the airport up to now.

In 1962, a plan suggesting major renovations for the airport was approved. This plan included lengthening of the airport's runway, construction of a new terminal, and strengthening of the pavements. When such renovations were finished, the airport was reopened and became known as Launceston Airport.

In 1998, Launceston Airport became a private facility. At present, it is owned and operated by the Australia Pacific Airports Corporation Limited.

Runways

Launceston Airport currently has three runways, two of which have grass surface. The longest of them, runway 14R/32L, has an asphalt surface and measures 1,981m long. The shorter runways, 14L/32R and 18/36, measure 700m and 690m, respectively.

Terminals

The airport has one main terminal, which underwent a A$20-million redevelopment project just recently. The project involved expansion of the terminal, as well as creation of new gate lounges, departure areas, arrivals hall, and car-rental counters. The new departure area contains 12 check-in desks for all the airlines operating in the airport. Connected to these desks is a checked bag screening facility (CBS).

The new terminal was opened in March 12, 2010, with the Premier of Tasmania David Bartlett as the honor guest.

Flights and Destinations

Five airlines - Australian Air Express, Jetstar Airways, Qantas, Sharp Airlines, and Virgin Australia - provide domestic flights to Brisbane, Hobart, Melbourne, Sydney, and Flinders Island.

Transport To and From the Airport

Launceston Airport can be accessed primarily through private vehicles. The airport has car parks that offer long- and short-term parking. It also has this Overflow Car park, which can hold up to 150 cars. Launceston Airport does not provide any public vehicle services that travel directly from the airport to Launceston. Nevertheless, there are taxi services and shuttle buses from the city center that goes to the airport.
