As the sole airport that operates on the area where it is located, the Coffs Harbour Airport is the only airport that services the coastal city of Coffs Harbour. It is also one of the largest and busiest airports in New South Wales, accommodating various types of aircrafts, including a Boeing-767. It is currently a hub for airlines such as Brindabella, Virgin Australia, and Qantas.

History

Coffs Harbour Airport was built in 1928 by the City Council. During the Second World War, it was acquired by the Royal Australian Air Force to be used as an airbase. In 1990, however, the Council was able to fully-own the airport, and a plan for its expansion was made. The first stage of this expansion project, which aimed to widen the airport's main runway, began on May 1999.

After the completion of the runway expansion, terminal expansion came next. The main goal is to solve the problem of overcrowding during peak season, and also to keep up with the growing demand for the next 10 years. The new terminal was opened on November 2000.

Both projects were completed without using taxpayers' money. The airport has its own money to spend for the upgrades, which is currently being repaid through its operating profits.

Runways

The airport has two runways, both made of asphalt. Runway 03/21 is 2,080m long, while runway 10/28 is 849m long.

Meteorological Services

The Meteorological Office of the airport, which was built on November 1940, is still operational today. It has undergone some renovations, which aimed to improve the facilities, and therefore, the services that it offers. It is currently a part of the country's Bureau of Meteorology.

Flights and Destinations

Coffs Harbour Airport currently handles more than 26,000 aircrafts, 5,000 of which are passenger aircrafts. The airlines that currently operate on the airport carry passengers to the Australian cities of Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney.

Transport To and From the Airport

There are six car rental companies that provide services for the passengers. For those who have their own car, an open-air car park is available, which can accommodate up to 200 cars. A 24-hour security car park can be found next to the airport terminal.
