Cairns Airport, being able to cater international, domestic and general aviation flights, is Australia's seventh busiest airport. It is run by the government-owned corporation Cairns Port Authority before North Queensland Airports bought it from the government of Queensland.

History

This airport has a long-standing history dating back to 1928. Though it was originally intended for the private use of Tom McDonald with his de Havilland Gipsy Moth, Cairns Airport became a part of the history when the Australian Government bought it during the second World War to be used as transport base by the Royal Australian Air Force and United States Army Air Force. Since then, the airport underwent various improvements and upgrades, such as further lengthening of the runways and construction of a new terminal building. The first flights, via Ansett Australia and Trans Australia Airlines, took place in the 1970s.

Runways

Cairns airport currently has two runways. The first one is the main 15/33 runway that measures 3,196m in length, and the second one is the shorter 12/30 that measures 925m long.

Terminals

The airport has separate Domestic and International terminals, which are 200m away from each other. The Domestic terminal, which underwent a redevelopment project worth $200million in 2007-2010, has a common-user facility for all domestic airlines (Qantas, Virgin Australia, Skytrans, Jetstar, and Hinterland Aviation) operating on the airport. Five jet bridges, which replaced the previously existing three bridges, were built. The International terminal, on the other hand, consists of two-levels and has facilities for the different airlines that offer international flights from the airport.

Flights and Destinations

Cairns Airport offers domestic flights to 25 regional and capital state destinations. It also has direct flights to seven locations including Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, Singapore, Auckland, Port Moresby and Guam, in addition to the through flights to Europe and USA.

Transport To and From the Airport

For travelers using their own vehicle, the airport has fully-automated long- and short-term car parks which operate 24/7. Both international and domestic terminals have their own parking spaces that offer free 10-minute parking for passengers.

Car rental companies are also available. Their offices are located in the northern end of the domestic terminal and in the arrivals hall of the international terminal. Taxi ranks can be found outside the terminals.

Another option would be the bus services of Sun Palm Transport group that routes to hotels, city centers, Palm Cove, Port Douglas, Northern Beaches, Cape Tribulations and south to Mission Beach.
